Small agricultural companies, new entrepreneurs or a person who decided to buy a special equipment for private use, cannot afford a new tractor.
The way out is to buy used equipment which is cheaper than its counterparts just come off the conveyor belt, but the purchase opens up many pitfalls.
How to choose a used tractor correctly not to regret the unsuccessful purchase?
Guided by the general design and safety requirements in special equipment, particularly tractors, it is difficult to make a mistake when inspecting and choosing old equipment.
And so, what do you need to know when buying a used tractor? Let’s note the main points:
- Examine the engine for leaks of fuel, machine oil or water from the cooling system. If these are present, it will lead to a speedy repair and danger to the driver’s life. The same applies to gas leaks in the connecting tube.
- Check the brake system for proper operation. If it is good, the braking system works smoothly, without any jerks, bringing the tractor to a complete stop. The machine must remain stationary both on an uphill and downhill slope. When inspecting a serviceable braking system, the brake shoes and belts must not touch the drums. It is unacceptable to get oil on the pads and belts of the tractor brakes.
- According to the requirements to the undercarriage, the tires must be free of damage, separation of the carcass. The pattern on them must be clear, not worn. The wheels themselves are fixed with nuts to the hub. Lack of one, increases the risk of an accident when the tractor moves.
- Not the least important is the pressure in the tires. Each tractor model has its own tire pressure. Correct tire pressure affects the steering of the machinery
- If the steering in the tractor requires effort when shifting to the left or right, it means that the equipment has the wrong front wheel alignment. To correct the problem, change the length of the transverse steering arms.
- Pay attention to the speed shift lever. Often in older tractor models it is necessary to apply force to shift the speed, and a grinding noise may occur. This indicates a defective gearbox.
This short list of rules should be followed when choosing a used tractor.
The photo shows a 1995 Massey Ferguson 8120 with 9,967 hours, fully serviced and repaired. Our company have found it in Poland, the initial price was 18 000 USD, but after consultation and negotiation, we were able to reduce the price to 15-000 USD, as well as customs clearance deducted VAT, this is still -23%, adding logistics costs. The final cost of the tractor turned out to be $12,200 + shipping costs.
